This week is our Biography Bash! Students will listen to read-alouds of biographies from the Little People Big Dreams series. Our theme is music artists! This activity is a great way to get students excited about reading nonfiction and introduce them to the concept of genres, both in music and literature.
Remember to check your reading challenges and log your reading on Biblionasium!
Hello 5th Grade!
This week, we are switching focus from summarizing to paraphrasing. Summarizing involves finding the main idea of a text. Paraphrasing is restating text in your own words. Also, this month's literacy theme is... Biography! Here is a selection of Biographies on Epic. Which is your favorite? Hello Grade 5! I hope you had a wonderful D.E.A.R. week! I always feel like the 10 minutes is never enough. I wish we could have D.E.A.R. time every morning. What book did you read last week? I am reading the Harry Potter series, and am on the sixth book: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.
This week, we are continuing our practice in summarizing text. Together, we will read about important female adventurers, in the book Her Epic Adventure. The strategy that we are focusing on this week is T-E-L-L. Remember to log your reading on Biblionasium. I will check students progress in their challenges weekly. We are continuing our unit on summarizing and pivoting to focus on nonfiction text. Together, we will refine our summarizing skills by separating main ideas from details. We will also continue with our personal challenges, and check in with students individually on their reading progress. This week is D.E.A.R. week! Remember to bring a book with you to each class. Also, next week is Battle of the Books! Be sure to read books from the EPIC selections. Winners will receive Hugo Points! I am so excited to see all your faces in the library again! I hope you had a wonderful break and either read some stories, or create your own stories to remember and share.
We are hitting the ground running this semester. Our first unit is centered around note-taking. Our first task is summarizing fiction. We will read the book The Journey together and summarize it together as a class. Then, students will read their own selections and write a Biblionasium summary using the tools we learned in class. Here are links to the resources you will need in class this week.
In addition to personal reading challenges, I've decided to share the reading list for our Battle of the Books competition at the end of January. Students will participate in a reading comprehension and vocabulary game show-style competition based on these selections from Epic Reading. My class code is adb2960, and students can login as guest or their grade level.
As we begin to set New Year's resolutions, G3-5 students will transition from school-wide challenges to monthly personal reading challenges. All students have already set up a Biblionasium challenge with me, and will be expected to log their reading on the website. Their current challenge begins now and ends January 31st. Some students chose to read a certain amount of minutes, while some students chose to read a book or set of books. If students do not log their reading on Biblionasium, I will not be able to see their reading progress. Please ensure students complete their reading logs at home for participation points. After the break, I will check these challenges weekly, but they are welcome to get started on them now!
Hello 5th Grade! We are continuing our Evaluate unit by learning about the 5Ws of spotting false information, or "fake news." Also, we will continue with our sentence frame reading logs to prepare for writing Biblionasium book reviews.
